Coronary artery disease (CAD) is an extremely dangerous disease that is the clear number one cause of death, ahead of cancer. It is therefore of the highest importance that a coronary artery disease becomes quickly identified and then adequately and thoroughly treated. CAD often becomes noticeable through fierce and burning chest pain. Typically, the discomfort will arise during physical exertion or anxiety and stress. It can, however, also arise during relaxation, e.g. overnight. CAD can also be present without causing any discomfort, e.g. in diabetics. In addition, it can also often cause atypical pains, especially for females.
Should you experience suspicious discomfort or other causes for concern (e.g. an abnormal ECG result), a careful, thorough examination will be undertaken at the practice. This will typically involve your medical history, an ECG and stress ECG. As supplementary tests, a stress echocardiogram, scintigraphy and computed tomography can be used. Finally, a diagnosis of coronary artery disease is always reached using a cardiac catheter. The examination will identify those coronary arteries affected by circulatory disturbances. The examining doctor will show you the coronary arteries on a screen and explain the treatment options. If appropriate, a PTCA and stent implant will be carried out during the same appointment. Afterward, you will be transferred to the clinic’s observation station for further medical treatment. Should a PTCA/stent implant not be necessary, you can also undergo the examination as an outpatient; following a PTCA/stent implant, a two-day hospital stay is necessary.
